Every race has it. That particular electricity in the days before the gun goes off — the anticipation that no amount of experience ever fully tames.

Sea Otter has it in abundance. But this year it carries something extra.

Where the season begins — and where the first decisions are made.
Sea Otter Classic 2024.

On April 16 in Monterey, the 2026 Life Time Grand Prix opens its season. Fifty elite athletes — 25 women, 25 men — will line up for the LTGP gravel race, one of roughly ten disciplines contested across the Sea Otter Classic festival that week.

The Fuego XL runs the same weekend — a separate elite mountain bike race on a different course entirely. Sea Otter contains multitudes.

The LTGP gravel race carries a $350,000 equal-pay prize purse across the full series. That story is compelling on its own.

But running parallel to it is a race most casual observers won’t even notice.

Eighty athletes — men and women — are chasing six wildcard spots into the full series: three per gender.

The top performers combined get in. Everyone else goes home. It’s a brutal filter.

My focus is on the women’s side of that chase, and it’s where I’ll be pointing my camera.

I know these races from the inside.

I’ve ridden Unbound, lined up at Crusher in the Tushar, and crossed the finish at Big Sugar — back when I was a participant rather than the person with the camera.

At Sea Otter, I’ve photographed LTGP racing, then gone out and done my own gravel race.

That’s where this comes from — not a press pass, but years of showing up and caring about what happens here.

The race always ends somewhere.
But what it means isn’t always decided at the finish line.

Gravel has given me more than I can account for. Finish lines I had no business reaching. Friendships with fellow age groupers who understand exactly what it costs to show up and give everything on these roads. And genuine connections with athletes and photographers who welcomed a guy with a camera and a lot of questions.

This community — from the back of the pack to the front — is worth documenting.

That’s what I’m going back to Sea Otter to do.

Women’s racing has earned the spotlight — and I’ll keep showing up with a camera to prove it.
