Meanders Aren’t Mistakes

A solitary runner on the Chicago lakefront path with the John Hancock Center rising in the background and Lake Michigan on the left.
Chicago lakefront — where endurance started. The John Hancock in the background, the lake to my left, and a question forming I didn't know I was asking yet.

In my earth science lab, students changed the slope of a stream model and watched what happened.
The flow velocity shifted. Sediment transport changed. Erosion patterns reformed. Channels self-organized into new configurations.
The stream didn’t fight the change. It found the most efficient path given the new conditions.
Meanders aren’t mistakes. They’re what happen when force meets time.
That’s what this is.

Dell Montana Meander

West Loop deck: The West Loop deck. String lights, city skyline, comfortable life. The one I traded for a van and a dirt road.

I left a Chicago corporate tower in 2022 with a plan — build a van, chase snow and gravel, document the journey, tell the stories. Not adrift. A decision.
The trail doesn’t reward speed. It rewards attention.

Dell, Montana meander

Dell, Montana. August 2025. GDMTBR Season 1. The stream finds its own path. So did I.
Dispatches is where I put what I notice. Field notes from rides, races, and the long quiet miles in between. Reflections that don’t fit in a caption. Photos that need more than a hashtag.
Delivered now and then — not nonstop.
